EA Sports Madden License And What The Future Holds For Sports Gaming

I’m sure that you’ve heard by now that the exclusive license that EA Sports has with Madden has been extended. Some people are disappointed by the extension because they feel that other companies (2ksports) may be able to produce a better product. I must admit as a consumer there are very few things to be optimistic about these days, but as I look towards the future I can’t help but to be excited about the next few years of sports gaming. I think as video game consumers our voice amongst the producers making these games matters! Proof of this was the death of the NBA Live Series (Ah, r.i.p. NBA Live…we had some great times together).

I can remember growing up in the 90′s I played NBA Live religiously. I can remember someone mentioning that 2K had a good basketball game, but to me that was the equivalent of someone trying to convince me to wear a pair of Keds to the basketball court…..it just wasn’t going to happen. I was a victim of “sticking with the name brand”. At the time 2K may have had the best game on earth, but the point was I wasn’t willing to steer away from the name brand that EA had established. When I finally gave 2K a chance I felt as if I’d been lied to my whole life. I couldn’t belief how much more realistic 2K was and that I had been playing an arcade game (NBA Live) and didn’t even realize it. If 2K can pull this off with basketball who’s to say that it can’t be done for football (there are some that argue that it already has) and boxing (yup..I said it EA…you guys better come strong in your next release!)…For those of you excited about the exclusive extension you’ve got to ask your self are you a victim of the name brand?

Regardless of how you may feel regarding the extension of EA’s license one thing is for sure… We can almost guarantee that the competition between EA & 2Ksports will lead to better games. Personally, I feel that at this point in the video game age word of mouth and customer satisfaction are extremely crucial to the success of these companies. As a consumer I honestly feel pretty good about the future of the sports gaming industry! And I feel that my voice (on forums, etc.) is heard and taken into consideration during the development of games!
